Kolkata: The dispute over land for the Tata Motors’ Nano car project in Singur in West Bengal seemed to be heading for a solution after talks initiated by Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Friday.

“We had three hours of useful constructive discussions. Views were exchanged in a spirit of understanding,” said Gandhi.

"We are heading towards a solution. Our discussion regarding land is on," said Partho Chattopadhyay, leader of the Trinamool Congress, which leads protests over acquisition of farmland for the car factory.

A Raj Bhavan press statement said the talks between the government and groups protesting against the car factory were held in a "constructive spirit and will continue on Saturday”.

"We placed our demand for the return of the forcibly acquired land for the Singur project and we still stick to the demand. The government said it would give some land and develop some more,” said Manik Mukherjee, leader of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI).

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who is on a sit-in protest in Singur, said she would cooperate with the Governor and claimed her party wasn’t blocking a highway near the factory. "We want talks. The (Durgapur) Expressway is open," she said.
