Mumbai; A group of leading legal firms in Mumbai have moved a public interest litigation seeking the modernization of the city's police force.
The PIL has also been backed by leading corporates. They want the Maharashtra government to train and equip the police to meet terrorist threats.
The PIL says the city needs a Special Squad equipped with modern surveillance equipment, weaponry and transport, including helicopters.
The legal firms also want a Citizens Committee to be formed to oversee the implementation of these measures.
Last week, terrorists attacked the Taj Mahal Palace and the Trident-Oberoi - two of Mumbai's best known luxury hotels - and other landmarks in a 60-hour frenzy, killing 171 people, many at the hotels, where scores were held hostage.
